It’s important to understand diesel particulate filter (DPF) and how they operate, whether you own a diesel car or want to work as a diesel mechanic. Diesel particulate filters (DPF) are essential for the proper operation of diesel-fuel cars and trucks. Failure to keep these filters clean can have serious (and expensive) repercussions for the vehicle.
Follow along as we explain what diesel particulate filters are, how to spot a clogged filter, DPF delete/remove, types of regeneration and more.
What is a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)?
Diesel particulate filters catch and store exhaust soot, which must be burnt off regularly to regenerate the filter in order to minimize emissions from diesel automobiles. The regeneration process burns away any extra soot that has accumulated in the filter, preventing dangerous exhaust emissions and the black smoke that is typically seen when diesel engines accelerate.
A diesel particulate filter, or DPF, is an aftertreatment device for diesel engines that captures particulate matter like soot and ash. A DPF generally has a honeycomb-shaped substrate comprised of ceramic material.
What are the signs of a Blocked DPF and Problems?
Short trips at moderate speeds are frequently the source of clogged diesel particle filters. Vehicles travelling at low speeds on short travels are unable to fulfil the filter’s self-cleaning standards. If DPFs are not properly maintained, they may fail sooner. Filter blockage can also be caused by using the improper type of oil, making performance changes, using bad-quality fuel, or driving the automobile on a low fuel level repeatedly.

The major and most apparent evidence that there is a problem with the filter system is that the DPF warning light on your dashboard will illuminate, telling you that it will need to be regenerated in order to clean itself. If the DPF light is illuminated with the engine management light, the problem may have proceeded to a more serious level, requiring diagnosis using a diagnostic scanner.
When dealing with a DPF problems, there are a few more signs to keep an eye out for:
- You’ve observed that your gasoline usage has increased.
- Your car appears to be emitting excessive amounts of smoke.
- The automatic Stop-Start System doesn’t work.
- Diesel has a strong odour.
- Both passive and active regeneration continue to fail.
- On your dashboard, the DPF light will illuminate.
- Your engine seems to be losing power (limp mode).
Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) Cleaning
Cleanings are necessary in the same way as there are two sorts of particles being filtered. The soot is eliminated by converting carbon to carbon dioxide during regeneration, and the ash is removed by removing the filter and cleaning it with compressed air in a machine.
DPF Delete / Removal
Are you having problems with your DPF? Are you facing a large bill for your DPF replacement? Is your DPF causing you poor fuel economy? DPF Removal can solve your problems. After the DPF is removed, our DPF deletion will ensure that you enjoy trouble-free driving and that your car will never go into limp mode owing to DPF regeneration again.
DPF Removal from Fixmycar.pk or Top Tuners will ensure that your vehicle runs without the DPF. Most customers benefit from a performance remap in addition to the DPF remap, which delivers even greater results than the DPF removal alone. The following are some of the advantages of removing DPF:
- There are no high-priced DPF replacements.
- The vehicle’s power output has been improved. We’ve put a lot of vehicles through their paces before and after DPF removal, and every single one of them has improved performance.
- After the DPF is removed, biofuels may be used because the DPF filter is no longer a problem.
- When the vehicle decides to undertake a forced regeneration, there will be no further limp modes.
- Km/l is improved as a result of the elimination of an air restriction, which allows the engine to breathe more freely.
Fixmycar.pk and Top Tuners experts have expertise in deleting this DPF system from any diesel vehicle , trucks and heavy machinery. We have deleted these in following engines: 1KD, 2KD, 1GD and 2GD UK / GUN 125. We also tune Toyota diesel engines for Pakistani environment and fuel. Fuel map upgrade gives lots of power.

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Regeneration
Soot particles are caught by diesel particulate filters (DPF), which prevent them from entering the exhaust system. To preserve performance, they must be emptied on a regular basis, just like any other filter. This is referred to as ‘Regeneration’ in the case of a DPF. The gathered soot is burned off at a high temperature, leaving just ash behind. There are two types of DPF regeneration:
Passive DPF Regeneration System
When the exhaust temperature is high on the highway, passive regeneration occurs automatically. The exhaust goes via the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) first, then through the diesel particulate filter, which captures soot particles within the aftertreatment device (ATD). When the temperature in the engine rises to the point where soot, or carbon, reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide, passive regeneration occurs. Carbon dioxide can flow through the filter since it is a gas.
Active DPF Regeneration System
When the engine isn’t producing enough heat, active regeneration takes place. This may happen in a truck that isn’t fully loaded. When the amount of soot in the exhaust reaches a specific level, the engine injects fuel into the exhaust stream, which passes over the oxidation catalyst and oxidizes the fuel to produce heat. The heat generated by the oxidation of the fuel is then utilized to convert the soot to carbon dioxide.
Both active and passive regeneration happen automatically and without driver input. Active regeneration can occur automatically any time the vehicle is moving. The exhaust gas temperature could reach 1500℉ (800℃).
When the DPF is regenerating, there are a sign to keep an eye out for:
- Higher fuel consumption
- A hot and unusual smell
- Engine idle speed can be higher than normal
- Start-stop will more than likely be deactivated
- Cooling fan is running

DPF Filters Are Installed In Which Diesel Cars?
Modern diesel vehicles have been required to incorporate a diesel particulate filter since 2009. PSA Peugeot Citroen, on the other hand, installed the filters in its diesel vehicles as early as 2000, anticipating the Euro 5 rules. If you’re not sure if your car has one, please contact us and we’ll gladly verify and confirm it for you.
