P0230 Error Code Fuel Pump Primary Circuit Malfunction

Fuel Pump Primary Circuit Malfunction or Error code P0230 can come up in Dead head and return type fuel systems. This also indicates that the fuel pump primary circuit is having a problem in Off/ON command. Sometimes, this code can also set when there is an incorrect voltage detected by the PCM in fuel circuit system.

What is a fuel pump ?

A fuel pump is an essential component on a modern car. Except for some vehicles with gravity fuel feed such as motorcycles and some carburetor vehicles having mechanical pump, almost all vehicles use a fuel pump. Any fuel injected engines use electric fuel pumps that are mounted inside the fuel tank (and some fuel injected engines have two fuel pumps: one low pressure/high volume supply pump in the tank and one high pressure/low volume pump on or near the engine). Fuel pressure needs to be within certain range for the engine to run correctly. If the fuel pressure is too high, the engine will run rough and rich. If the pressure is too low, the engine may run lean, misfire, or stall.

Any vehicle equipped with OBD-II can have this code. P0230 is a generic code type.

Common Symptoms of P0230

The vehicle may show following symptoms and illuminate CEL (Check Engine light)

No start condition
No fuel pump operation
Fuel pump running all the time with ignition on

Check battery voltage is within specifications
Check electrical connections on fuel pump motor
